New Year Hair Resolutions

It's a brand new year, not so new anymore but you get the drill. Most of us have resolutions for the new year. It may be to loose or add weight, to learn a skill, to start singing etc. The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on current habits and set goals on areas that needs to be worked on. In this article, I'm going to show the areas of my hair care routine that I'll be tweaking this year. Enjoy your read!

1. Commit myself to a simple haircare routine
There's this saying - "less is more". This is so true in hair care. When I started my natural hair journey 19 months ago, I did almost everything I saw on the internet about haircare. I was a product junky. Most of the products I bought are unused today.  Doing or buying everything you see other people do will not only hurt your hair(because some of these things may not suitable for your hair) but will also hurt your pocket. I've come to learn a lot about hair care and from what I've learnt, I found out that it's not actually how much you do a thing but how well you do it. Towards the end of 2019 I let go of a lot of things and I can say my hair has not stopped thanking me. This year I'm going to try stick to a very simple yet effective hair care routine.

2. Learn to style my natural hair texture
Since my big chop, I've been mostly on extensions. I rarely wear my hair out. I want to learn how to style my natural hair so I can wear it out more this year. Another reason I'm learning to style my hair is bad salon experiences. Most of the stylists around don't know how to handle natural hair. They comb hair as if they are fighting World War lll. I want to limit my salon visits and do simple styles like twists for now. My goal before the end of the year is to learn how to use extensions to style my hair myself.

3. Incorporate ayurveda in my hair care routine
Oh yeah, I'm joining the ayurveda train. Ayuverdic herbs has a lot of benefits to the hair some of which include;

  • Reduces hair loss
  • Strengthens the hair
  • Improves scalp health
  • Encourages hair growth
  • Conditions hair
  • Adds shine to hair
  • Improves hair thickness
I'll be incorporating them in my wash day routine maybe as tea for pre-poo or as a gloss for deep conditioning.

4. Eat Healthy
The food we eat has a great effect on hair growth. The scalp need a healthy supply of nutrients to form new hair. These nutrients can only be made available to the scalp if we eat healthy foods. Read about diet and its effects on hair growth here

So this year, I'm going to make a deliberate effort to eat right and get a good balance of all the classes of food.

5. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is so important to our hair and skin. When the body is dehydrated it doesn't work well. You feel tired, your blood pressure drops, you get headaches and among all these, the hair becomes dry and frizzy. The scalp becomes dry, flaky and susceptible to dandruff. No amount of moisturizer can keep the hair moisturized if the body is dehydrated. Hydration comes first. It is advised to drink at least 2 litres of water daily to keep the body hydrated. This is what I'll be doing this year.

6. Trims
The mere thought of this turns on the alarm bells in my head. I hate losing hair and trimming is just another way to lose hair. However, I've come to realize that trimming is letting go of the dead ends. Split ends can cause more damage if not removed on time. I'm used to postponing trims with the hope of saving length but this year I'm putting health first before length.

7. ALWAYS sleep in a satin bonnet
As a natural hair influencer, I'm always preaching the gospel on satin bonnets but girl, I'm too tired sometimes to even carry myself around talk more putting on a satin bonnet before sleep. This year I'm not letting this happen. I want my hair protected when I sleep.

8. Attend hair festivals
This right here is an ultimate goal this year. I would love to meet other women like me who has embraced their coils. Nothing feels better than getting to interact and share ideas with other women who have chosen the same path as me.

There you have it! 8 areas of my hair journey I'm spicing up this year. You too can create and achieve your hair goals.
