Proven tips to help you retain more length

The anagen (growth) phase of an African woman lasts an average of 3 to 5 years. So if you retain an average of 6 inches a year, by the end of the anagen phase, you should be having about 18 to 30 inches length of hair, that's a lot of hair!  Learn more about the hair growth cycle here.

I've seen people grow their hair for more than 3 years but don't have 18 inches. Want to know why? Here's why; their growth rate might be naturally slower than average or they are not retaining length.

Why are you not retaining length?
Breakage! Breakage is the culprit. The more hair you loose to breakage, the less length you retain. To retain length you have to put a stop to breakage and how do you do that? By eliminating the cause. Common causes of breakage include;

  • Dry hair
  • Weak hair
  • Over manipulation
  • Poor detangling
  • Too much heat and chemical treatment
  • Poor detangling method
  • Bad towel drying
  • Diet

The key to length retention is having a regimen and staying consistent to it. A regimen should consist of;

Cleansing which helps to remove dirt and product build-up from the scalp and hair. Too much dirt can clog the hair pores and slow down growth. That myth of dandruff grows hair is ❌❌. A clean scalp encourages growth. Cleansing is done using a shampoo or co-wash.

✔ After cleansing you need a deep conditioner to help infuse moisture back into the hair or strengthen it. A moisturising deep conditioner adds moisture to hair while a protein deep conditioner strengthens it.

✔A leave-in conditioner to keep your hair soft and moisturized in between wash days.

Oils and creams to help seal in moisture from the leave-in conditioner and prevent breakage that can result from dry hair.

✔Installing low manipulation styles to help reduce hair manipulation and improve length retention. Make sure your styles aren't too tight and doesn't pull on the edges.

Bonus Tips

  •  Stay hydrated
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Dry hair with micro - fiber towel

  1. Great tips. Also to retain more inches during the anagen phase, products application should start from the tip/ends of your hair in section. This will help protect the ends of your hair and minimise any form of breakage because the ends are the oldest part of our hair and should be given more attention.
